Hot Gadget

There's plenty to choose from if you're willing to spend a bit more for a high-end laptop computer.

Regardless of how much cash you have, you need to take into account the needs of the person you are shopping for. Is a super-sharp touch screen important? What about a fast processor? How much weight is the gift recipient willing to cart around?

This gift guide covers laptops with starting prices of more than $1,000, including a class of thin, light Windows laptops known as ultrabooks. Prices listed are manufacturers' suggestions, and you can often shop around for deals.

— DELL XPS 12, starts at $1,000:

What sets this ultrabook apart is the way it converts into a tablet. Basically, you pop the screen out of its frame, flip it around and then close the laptop. The move puts the screen on the outside and the keyboard on the inside.

RELATED: This holiday, budget laptop choices abound

It's a quick and easy switch. But because the keyboard remains connected, you're not dropping any of its 3.4 pounds. While reasonable for a laptop, that's about triple the weight of many full-sized tablets currently on the market.

The XPS might be good for someone who needs a fairly powerful laptop for work, but still wants to kick back in bed without a keyboard getting in the way.

— APPLE MACBOOK PRO, high-resolution, 13-inch version starts at $1,299:

There's no touch screen, something that Apple opposes in laptops, but it does offer nearly the same crystal-clear resolution as the latest iPads. The screen is among the best at this price.

And of course, there's no Windows 8, an operating system that some people find confusing to use. The MacBook uses Apple's Mac system and integrates well with other Apple products, including iPhones, iPads and Apple TVs.

Two price cuts this year totaling $400 brings the 13-inch model to $1,299, just $200 more than the less-powerful MacBook Air of that size. For the 15-inch version, you'll be paying at least $1,999.

— SONY VAIO PRO 13, starts at $1,250:

The Vaio is exceptionally thin when closed and weighs about 2.3 pounds, making it the lightest 13-inch model I tested. Part of that comes from its carbon-fiber construction, which improves durability while reducing weight. But it also made the laptop feel cheap and plastic-like.

The small size also comes with sacrifices. Sony says battery life is up to 6.5 hours, considerably less than other laptops at this price.

This might be good for someone who wants to get work done on the road while traveling light. You can save $100 by going with an 11-inch model.

— LENOVO YOGA 2 PRO, starts at $1,199:

Like its name implies, the Yoga is very flexible.

Besides the traditional laptop mode, you can bend its 13-inch screen all the way back to close it, so the screen is on the front and the keyboard is exposed on the back. In that configuration, it works like a tablet.

You can also bend it into a triangle, laying one edge on a flat surface and having the display angled like a tent. This lets you use it as a tablet, but keep it upright. It's particularly helpful when you're crunched for space.

Or, you can flip it almost all the way around, so that the keyboard is on the bottom and the screen leans back at whatever angle you like. That's good for watching videos while kicking back on the couch or in bed.

The laptop itself feels thin, light and relatively sturdy. Although it weighs more than the Sony Vaio, it's slightly thinner. The rubber edges that give the laptop traction when it's in tent mode are a nice touch.

And if you want your laptop to stand out, the Yoga comes in orange besides the more traditional silver and gray combination.

— SAMSUNG ATIV BOOK 9 PLUS, starts at $1,400:

This was one of the more beautiful laptops I looked at. From its metal construction to its high-definition touch screen, it screams elegance and class.

The laptop is super thin, at 0.54 inches thick, but weighs just over 3 pounds, similar to several others I tested. It feels heavy relative to its compact size.

Battery life clocked in at 7.5 hours, considerably less than other laptops at that price. But the trade-off is a super-sharp screen that offers a higher resolution than the MacBook Pro, which already has among the best displays at that price.

You might like this if you want to impress the other mobile workers at the coffee house, don't want a lot of bulk and don't feel the need to replace your tablets.

— MICROSOFT SURFACE 2 PRO, starts at $899, cover with movable keys brings it to $1,029.

Ok, so this isn't actually a laptop, but it does a lot of the same work without the bulk of one.

The Surface Pro 2 is a more powerful version of Microsoft's Surface 2 tablet, and the company is pushing both as replacements for laptops. Just like a PC laptop, it runs Windows 8 and gives you access to all the Microsoft Office programs.

This tablet's kickstand has been redesigned to include two positions — important because that now makes it practical to actually use on your lap. You're better off paying the extra $10 for the $130 Type Cover 2; the keys on the Touch Cover 2 don't move and are harder to use.

Looking for something cheaper? The $449 Surface 2 runs a lightweight version of Windows 8.1 called RT. But that tablet works only with apps designed specifically for it, not the broader pool of programs available for Windows PCs.

2014 Audi R18 e-tron Quattro

The name remains unchanged but the technology is completely new. In the 2014 season, Audi is aiming to achieve the hat-trick in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and another success in the Le Mans 24 Hours with a Le Mans prototype that has been redeveloped from scratch combined, yet again, with technical innovations that are relevant to the production models of the brand with the four rings as well.

The 2014-generation Audi R18 e-tron quattro is the most complex race car ever built by Audi. At first glance, the new hybrid sports car appears like a continuous further development of the World Championship winning car and Le Mans winner of the past two years. However, due to the new LMP1 regulations that will come into effect in 2014, Audi Sport factually redeveloped every single component.

The next Audi R18 e-tron quattro represents a completely new generation of Le Mans prototypes, explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. The principles of the LMP1 regulations have fundamentally changed. The idea behind this is to achieve similarly fast lap times as in the past with considerably less energy. Making more out of less: a forward-thinking approach.

Chris Reinke, Head of LMP at Audi Sport, talks about a revolution in thinking. A fundamental approach to motorsport is being abandoned. Instead of power output, energy consumption will be subject to limitations this is in line with the spirit of our times and opens up great technical freedoms to the engineers. In 2014, we’ll be seeing a wide variety of concepts on the grid at Le Mans.

The basic elements of the Audi R18 e-tron quattro’s new configuration were defined back in 2012 and the design of all the single components started at the end of 2012. The new LMP1 sports car was rolled out in the early fall of 2013, followed by track tests of the most recent R18.

In the new Technical Regulations, a large number of principal definitions, which concern the powertrain, body dimensions, safety and aerodynamics, were re-determined. With the new R18, Audi Sport has opted for a similar concept as in the past albeit with innovative detailed solutions and an additional hybrid system. The key details:

-A further developed V6 TDI mid-engine powers the rear wheels
-e-tron quattro hybrid system at the front axle (ERS-K Energy Recovery System Kinetic, a system to store kinetic energy)
-Optimized flywheel energy storage system
-Hybrid system with an electric turbocharger in the internal combustion engine (ERS-H Energy Recovery System Heat, a system that stores energy converted from heat)

New approaches to powertrain technology and energy management

Never before has a race car been powered by technology as complex as the one used in Audi’s new LMP1 sports car. The TDI engine, which sets the benchmark in terms of efficiency, remains a time-tested and important element of the overall concept. The further developed V6 TDI unit of the Audi R18 e-tron quattro makes a crucial contribution to the car’s compliance with the energy specifications of the regulations. The new R18 has to do with up to 30 percent less fuel than its immediate predecessor.

In addition to the internal combustion engine, the powertrain concept, for the first time, features the integration of two hybrid systems. As in the past, a Motor-Generator-Unit (MGU), during braking events, recovers kinetic energy at the front axle, which flows into a flywheel energy storage system. For the first time, the turbocharger of the internal combustion engine is linked to an electrical machine, which makes it possible to convert the thermal energy of the exhaust gas flow into electric energy for instance when the boost pressure limit has been reached. This energy also flows into the flywheel energy storage system. When the car accelerates, the stored energy can either flow back to the MGU at the front axle or to the innovative electric turbocharger, depending on the operating strategy.

The overall design of these systems and their direct impact on engine and powertrain management require highly complex coordination and tuning work. Audi Sport initially performed theoretical analyses and simulations, followed by rig testing and, since October, by track tests. The options available to the drivers and engineers as a result of the new technology are now more extensive than ever before.

Significantly changed conditions for the aerodynamicists

New freedoms, accompanied by greater restrictions this is how the new framework conditions for aerodynamics can be put in a nutshell. A few examples: The 10 centimeter slimmer body of the new LMP1 sports car means that the front of the R18 becomes mathematically smaller which is an advantage. The bodywork accommodates slimmer wheels, which, in turn, reduces aerodynamic drag. This is contrasted by other innovations that do not provide any advantages in aerodynamics. At 1,050 millimeters, the race car has to be 20 millimeters higher than before, and larger cockpit dimensions are prescribed as well. This leads to less favorable aerodynamics. The lower overall width of the car results in a slimmer underfloor. In addition, it features a completely different shape in the area of the cutouts for the front wheels. Consequently, the area that can produce downforce becomes smaller. With respect to designing the front end, the engineers enjoy new freedoms. Instead of a diffusor, a genuine front wing with a flap may be used for the first time. This promises aerodynamic advantages and lower costs, as this part of the bodywork will lend itself to easier modification to suit the various race tracks. In the past, it was necessary to produce different bodywork assemblies.

On the other hand, greater limits have been imposed on the aerodynamic design freedoms at the rear end. Use of the exhaust gas in the area of the rear diffusor, as in the case of the 2013-generation Audi R18 e-tron quattro, is now prohibited.

Further improvement of safety

Even in the past, LMP1 sports cars with their closed CFRP cockpit structure were regarded as one of the safest race car categories of all. Two severe accidents of the R18 at Le Mans in 2011 saw the Audi drivers get off lightly. But this is no reason to stop. The rule-makers have continued to improve the safety of the latest race car generation by imposing numerous discrete requirements.

The new monocoque has to resist higher loads. At the same time, it is reinforced by additional layers of fabric, which are hard to penetrate in the case of a concentrated impact. This reduces the risk of intrusion by pointed objects in accidents.

For the first time, wheel tethers are prescribed. They connect the outer assemblies of the front wheel suspensions with the monocoque and the ones of the rear suspensions with the chassis structure. Each of the two tethers required per wheel can withstand forces of 90 KN which equates to a weight force of nine metric tons. Another new feature is a CFRP structure behind the transmission the so-called ‘crasher’ which absorbs energy in a collision.

This is another example of the considerable challenges faced by the Audi engineers, as all these innovations increase weight, in addition to the second hybrid system. Audi’s previous Le Mans prototype weighed 915 kilograms. But in the future the car’s weight may be reduced to 870 kilograms which means that Audi’s ultra-lightweight design technology reaches a new dimension.

A large number of further innovations for instance in the areas of vision and interior ergonomics characterize the new Audi R18 e-tron quattro that will be making its racing debut in the 6-hour race at Silverstone (Great Britain) on April 20, 2014. The highlight of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) will be the Le Mans 24 Hours on June 14/15, 2014. The aim is clear: Audi is setting its sights on continuing to maintain the leading role it has enjoyed in sports prototype racing since 2000 and on again demonstrating ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ at Le Mans.

2014 Sergio Perez joins Force India

The 23-year-old lost his drive with McLaren less than a month ago and Perez is determined to prove he deserves another chance with a front-running Formula One team.

"I learned a lot at McLaren last year," Perez, who last year finished 11th in the drivers' championship. "McLaren made me a better driver than I was before I joined them. I learned a lot and I'm really looking forward to proving myself in 2014; achieving great things, good results.

"Hopefully we can have a strong car and confirm once again to top teams that I'm the right one for them.
"Hopefully I can do that and have another chance in a top team in a winning car."

Paul di Resta's Italian ancestry India's F1 story Only fastest will be team number one. For now, the Mexican's immediate future lies with Force India, the British-based team who were ranked as 2013's fifth fastest team before the introduction of new Pirelli tires halfway through the season saw their early season form fade.

The team, overseen by Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya, finished sixth in the team standings with German Adrian Sutil and Scotland's Paul di Resta at the wheel, both of whom are now without a drive in F1.

Next season sees Perez partner highly-rated German Nico Hulkenberg, who is returning for a second stint as a Force India driver.

Hulkenberg returns to Force India
"I'm happy now that I know what I'm doing for next year," said Perez, who took three podiums for Sauber in a breakthrough 2012 season that helped earn him a step up to McLaren as Lewis Hamilton's replacement.
"I'm very excited to join a young team full of energy, full of hunger to prove itself.

"Nico is one of the best drivers out there, there's no doubt about it. He's still looking for a great opportunity for his future and it's the same for me. "I think we are one of the strongest driver lineups on the grid". Mallya insisted neither of his 2013 drivers had done anything to warrant the axe but that that the time had come for a change. I saw at times what Sergio did to my own drivers on the track and I said that this guy meets the criteria I'm looking for

Vijay Mallya, Force India boss
With a major technical rule change on the horizon in 2014 and a smattering of new rules, which include a dose of double points at the season finale in Abu Dhabi, the Indian businessman believes he has chosen the right duo to drive forward a new era for his team.

New double points rule 'a novelty'
"I'm very, very happy with our driver lineup," Mallya told CNN. "I couldn't have done better than Nico and Sergio. "I've always backed those drivers who have exceptional talent and who are basically gutsy and hungry and Sergio certainly fits that bill. "I watched him at Sauber and he did an excellent job, no surprise that McLaren picked him up.

"I saw at times what Sergio did to my own drivers on the track and I said that this guy meets the criteria I'm looking for, exceptionally talented, quick and he has fire in his belly." Hulkenberg has some history with the team, joining them as a reserve in 2011 before being promoted to a race seat in 2012. The 26-year-old then joined Sauber as Perez's replacement last season.

Despite the German being a known quantity, Mallya insists he will not be the team leader in 2014. "There is no number one or number two or senior and junior, they should have healthy competition amongst themselves," he insisted. But, if Perez wanted an extra incentive to prove his talents when the new season beings in March, then his new boss might have given it to him.

"Nico Hulkenberg, I have a huge amount of respect for his talent," Mallya mused. "One day I think he will be world champion."

All New Yaris 2014 Coming Soon To Indonesia

When the new Toyota Vios was introduced earlier this year, fans of the Japanese brand wondered when the new version of the car's twin model, the Yaris, would be unveiled. Those fans can stop wondering now, as the latest iteration of the subcompact hatchback has appeared on the website of Toyota Thailand.

The new Toyota Yaris hatch just got introduces on the Thailand’s market, wearing a new face, which was actually not expected.

Unfortunately, that phrase is the only part of the website written in English--outside of the section headings--so we can't really convey much to you apart from these photos. Oh, yeah, we can decipher that part where it says the new Yaris will be available in four variants: G, E, J.

Yes, the new Yaris launched in Thailand is not the third generation one sold in the rest of the world, but it’s the hatchback version of the 2013 Toyota Vios sold in China.

The “Yarivios” uses the same 2,500 mm wheelbase of the Vios sedan while being shorter in length and height while wearing similar design elements with the ones on the sedan. The similarities continue even inside, where you will feel like in a Vios with a smaller boot, shrunk from 506 liters to just 326.

Based on the information released by Toyota Thailand, the new model will by 4,115 mm long, 1,700 mm wide, and 1,475 tall. Its dimensions have increased but the body will be sitting much lower to the ground.

The 2014 Toyota Yaris will reach the local market some time next year. We also speculate that the new Yaris that will be sold here will share the same old engine with the local Vios in Indonesia. Toyota did not produce a new engine such as engine with Dual VVT-i.

Powering the five-door hatch is a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with VVT-i that makes 109 hp, sent to the front wheels via a Super CVT-i.

2014 Honda VFR800F

The legendary VFR800F is completely updated with sharp, contemporary looks, a brand new telescopic fork, Pro-arm swingarm, wheels and bodywork. Plus adjustable seat height, standard-fit Traction Control System, ABS, heated grips and Honda's unique new self-cancelling indicators. 10kg lighter than the previous model, with the engine re-tuned for greater low and mid-range torque.

The V4 engine configuration is a special one for Honda, going back nearly 40 years. A complex, yet compact unit, it has a unique power delivery and a soul all its own. Honda's current RC213V MotoGP machine uses a V4, as does the flagship sport-touring VFR1200F. It's a powerplant woven tightly into Honda's engineering DNA.

And nowhere has the V4 engine been more at home than in the legendary VFR800F series - a truly all-round motorcycle that's always done sport as well as it tours, and all areas in between, with or without a pillion. It has inspired huge loyalty among owners over the last two decades and it's estimated there are still 75,000 VFRs in regular use across Europe.

The legion of VFR800F fans know exactly what they like about their bike and also what they'd like more - and less - of in a new model. With such an important model Honda has listened intently to customers' views; in essence they want a high-quality motorcycle with strong low and mid-range torque, light and slim but just as capable and adaptable, with a return to the evocative look and feel of VFRs of the past.

2014 Honda VFR800F Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features
Two factors were key drivers for Honda's engineers in development of the new VFR800F - firstly, to retain and expand the essential VFR qualities that inspire so many, and secondly, to update the new model with modern features and technologies.

Starting with the 782cc V4-VTEC engine, bottom and mid-range power have been boosted, to strike the ideal balance of enjoyable sports riding and easy commuting. The VTEC transition has been softened and the resulting power delivery is smooth, strong and linear. Honda's TCS (Traction Control System) has also been added.

Extensive work has gone into making the new VFR800F lighter than its predecessor, a whole 10kg lighter in fact. A single exhaust muffler has replaced the dual underseat design of the previous model and a host of detail changes save weight.

A brand new Pro-Arm single-sided swingarm, 43mm telescopic fork, radial-mount four-piston front brake calipers and redesigned wheels hang from the quintessentially VFR twin-spar aluminium beam frame. Seat height is adjustable by 20mm, ABS is fitted as standard and - for the first time - a Honda Genuine Accessories shift assist system is available to bolt straight on.

And then there's the styling. Considerably slimmer in the middle than the outgoing model, the 2014 VFR800F mixes a sleek silhouette with crisp, contemporary angles - and more than an echo of classic VFR design.
