Hyundai Equus 2014

Nearly three years ago when the Hyundai Equus first threatened to take the luxo-barge segment by storm, we knew that its reputation would ultimately be determined by its spec sheet, and its success would be determined by its value. Now that Equus has proven itself as a worthy competitor in today’s marketplace, Hyundai is ready for an encore, giving their top of the range executive sedan a thorough makeover for 2014.




Although Hyundai has not yet officially announced the changes for the 2014 model year, we can tell by looking at the new (Korean-spec) Equus that it will offer substantially more content than the current model. 




Features like LED headlights and fog lights, a larger LCD infotainment screen with Blue Link, restyled dash and center console with new electronic gear shift lever, updated steering wheel design with new controls, and a revised rear passenger area that features dual LCD screens for redundant control over entertainment and climate control are all new for 2014.

Frankfurt Motor Show 2013: The All New Startech

2015 Honda Civic Type-R

Usually, when one utters the word 'Type-R', the origin of the spoken trajectory always seems to come from a voice box attached to either a pimply-faced teen or someone that has 'cap-fitting' issues - i.e., the backwards hat brigade. Now, it's easy to stereotype without investigating the actual draw card with this Type-R obsession. That being the bang-for-buck hot Honda's offer: good handling and high revving, VTEC-delivered performance.



For the European and Asian market Civic, this tuned 'R' arrangement started out with the EK9 3-door hatch in 1997. From there on, successive generations have improved on the formula with emphasis put on weight reduction and engine fine-tuning. Currently, the Civic Type-R is on leave, however as we've reported earlier, Honda is readying a new 'fourth-generation' version - spied recently at the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.

With our rendering, we've translated those horrid zebra-coated prototype mules into something much more visually palatable. Starting with its eye-punching, acidic green paint job - the initial response is that someone from Honda nicked off with a WTCC racer and made it road legal. Cue those bulging fender-flares, with half-cut lower sections and chiseled frontal air intakes. Fog-lights sit recessed into the outer corners of the bumper, whilst the lower center intake is dissected by angled framework that leads up into the intersecting glossy black section, migrating towards the grille.

A casual glance may register the grille as looking similar to the 'garden' variety Civic; however, it's now deeper, squared-off and more desirable for bees with its honeycomb mesh inlay. Those with a penchant for hood scoops or bulges will have to make their own on this latest version - the hood is as standard compared to the lesser versions; although, in the interests of weight saving it's now stamped in aluminum.

Paying homage to Touring Car-like aero-kits, the front fender vents sit squared-off where the front doors hinge open - yet at the rear, the wheel-arch flares are smaller and less prominent. Below these are chunky side skirts which help 'ground' the car to improve its visual stance; they also extend around to the back diffuser where you'll find at set of prominent quad exhausts which emphasize that this Honda means serious business.

Speaking of the later, word is that grunt will be provided by a 1.6-liter direct-injection turbocharged four, transferring power to the front wheels via a six-speed manual. Reports have this upcoming pocket-rocket nearing the 300hp bracket, yet how well this will be transferred to the pavement remains to be seen. Rivals like the Ford Focus RS use special front suspension geometry to bypass torque-steer issues associated with high-output FWD cars; and the team at Honda may be considering the option of utilizing torque-vectoring systems too.

Making the most of this extra mumbo will be a stiffer and lighter chassis using adaptive suspension, which will be the bases of the most capable Civic to date. Unlike the previous 3rd-generation European-market Civic Type-R hatch, the 2015 version will be more family-friendly with the move to a more accessible five-door configuration. Sadly for U.S. enthusiasts, this will not make it Stateside - which is a shame, as Volkswagen, Ford and Mazda offer their Golf GTI / R, Focus and (previous-gen) Mazda3 versions in hot-hatch format for American consumption.

While it's not due to go on sale until 2015, Honda is said to be teasing tidbits of information at the fast approaching 2013 Frankfurt Motor show. Wether the whole car will be revealed remains to be seen - considering the new Civic Tourer will also debut at Frankfurt.

Ultimately the 2015 Type-R would have to be one of the most anticipated hot hatches in a while, and for myself - the first Honda in a long time that has me eagerly waiting for a test-drive. Like most other vehicle segments these days, it's fiercely contested and the Type-R will do battle against updated versions of the Mazdaspeed3, Ford Focus RS, and Volkswagen Golf GTi/R. One thing is for sure - those competitors will give nothing away.

VW Golf Sportsvan 2014

Volkswagen will reveal the Golf Sportsvan (pre-production) concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show, a car that previews the successor of the Golf Plus, scheduled to launch by mid-2014. Volkswagen doesn’t say it specifically, but the new production model may ditch the Plus moniker and replace it with Sportsvan.
Just like its predecessor, the Golf Mk7-based Sportsvan features a more spacious interior (over 1,500 liters/53 cubic feet of cargo capacity) and flexibility (the rear bench seat has 180 mm/7.1in fore-aft adjustment), than your regular Golf hatch.



The pre-production study also features assistance systems such as XDS+ electronic differential, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, electronic parking brake and Blind Spot Monitor incorporating Rear Traffic Alert. Used on a Golf for the first time, the latter warns the driver of vehicles in the blind spot.



Other available systems include DCC dynamic chassis control, the Front Assist with City Emergency Braking surroundings monitoring system, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and a lane-keeping assistant.The Sportsvan is also fitted with 7 airbags, a 5-inch touchscreen, variable cargo floor and cargo cover.



VW says the production Golf Sportsvan will come with six engines ranging from 85PS (84hp) to 150PS (148hp), all fitted with a stop-start system as standard and up to 19 percent more fuel efficient than previous engine versions. All units are Euro-6 compliant, with the most economical being the 110PS (108hp) 1.6 TDI BlueMotion which is estimated to average 3.7 l/100 km (63.5 mpg US) and 95 g CO2/km. VW says this is the best value among compact minivans.

The new member of the Golf family looks like a cross between the Golf hatchback and the Touran MPV, both in terms of styling and size. On the inside, the dashboard is similar to the one in the Golf, but features rearranged switches and air vents on the center console, with the touchscreen positioned higher. More details are expected to be released when the car will be revealed in Frankfurt.

Ford has announced plans to launch a new luxury brand called Vignale. BMW i8 CONCEPT



While the i3 is an everyday city car - albeit a very sophisticated one at that, the second member of BMW’s new i series that made its way to Frankfurt is an altogether different concept. Derived from the 2009 Vision EfficientDynamics study, the futuristic-looking i8 will enter production in 2013.



Hiding under the lightweight CFRP for skin is an extended range hybrid drivetrain comprising of a front-mounted electric motor sourced from the i3 and a rear-mounted 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol unit. The gasoline unit drives the rear wheels through a dual clutch transmission, while the electric motor uses a twin-speed transmission to turn the front wheels.



Combined maximum output of the two drive systems is 349HP and 550 Nm (405.6 lb-ft) of torque, which makes it more powerful than the previous-generation M3. The sprint to 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) takes just 4.6 seconds and top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h (155 mph).



According to BMW, the 2+2-seater i8 returns an average fuel consumption of just 2.7 lt/100 km (87mpg US).

Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R

Toyota will develop Yaris with hybrid technology after gaining a foothold in major racing disciplines like Formula 1 and endurance racing, Toyota is exploring its use on performance road cars as well. This is what the Yaris Hybrid-R concept is all about. 





Based on the Yaris 3-door, the study is powered by a highly tuned 1.6-liter gasoline engine combined with two electric motors to provide an “intelligent electric four-wheel drive capability,” according to Toyota.




The 300hp direct-injected turbocharged gasoline engine was specifically developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) according to FIA rules for a Global Race Engine and will be used in different motorsport competitions.

While the combustion engine drives the front wheels, each rear wheel is individually powered by a 60hp electric motor – the same as the one used in the standard Yaris Hybrid. Overall, the hybrid powertrain develops a system output of 420 hp.

Toyota says that the energy recovered during braking is stored in a super capacitor, just like in the TS030 Hybrid endurance racecar. In the Yaris, the capacitor is located under the rear seat, where the Yaris Hybrid's battery is usually positioned. The super capacitor has a higher power density and a fast power charge/discharge speed compared to the battery and is therefore better suited to sporty driving on track.




There’s even a third 60hp electric motor, located between the engine and the 6-speed sequential gearbox, that operates as a generator during deceleration to feed the super capacitor and during acceleration to directly power the rear electric motors.

The design of the car reflects its performance, with the Yaris Hybrid-R featuring a more aggressive look thanks to newly designed headlights, a wider front grille and black and blue details contrasting with the white body color. The front bumper includes two large air intakes and blue LED DRLs, while the flared fenders house unique 18-inch TRD wheels fitted with 225/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres with an asymmetrical tread design.




The study features grooved and perforated brake discs with six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear. The racing theme continues with the quick opening fuel cap located on the rear pillar. The LED taillights, roof-mounted spoiler, large diffuser and central exhaust pipe complete the styling package.

On the inside, the concept features dual tone Recaro bucket seats with black leather side bolsters and blue Alcantara. The latter is also used to cover parts of the door panels and the dashboard. The sport steering wheel is also wrapped in Alcantara, while the shift lever is located high and close to the driver’s right hand, just like in a racing car. 

The steering wheel features a button used to select the “Track” or “Road” mode at rest, or the "Boost" function while driving. Since the current Yaris lacks a hot-hatch variant, we can only hope Toyota will decide to build a limited production version of the Hybrid-R.
