A Surprise Kevin Magnussen To Replace Sergio Perez

Kevin Magnussen is taking a "massive risk" making his Formula 1 debut with McLaren next season, according to his new team-mate Jenson Button. McLaren have signed the novice Dane to replace Mexican Sergio Perez, who they have dropped after only one season.

"It's a situation that could light up your career or put an end to it early if it doesn't go well," said Button. "It's a massive risk for a driver to jump in at the deep end with a team that should be fighting at the front."

Button acknowledged Magnussen had proved to be "very quick" and technically adept in his two tests for McLaren so far, in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2012 and at Silverstone last summer.

The Briton said: "His outright speed is very good and more important for me is - from the tests he has done in an F1 car - his feedback has been very good, which is going to be very important for the start of the year.
"It's always good to have a team-mate who is intelligent, which I think he is, and willing to learn."

Button praised Magnussen for being willing to take the chance after McLaren decided he had done enough in testing and in their simulator to prove he deserved the promotion. "If a driver is willing to take that risk, he has a lot of confidence in himself and his ability. That's good," Button said.

"It could go one way or the other. I hope it goes the positive way because he is someone I want to work with throughout the year and he needs to be in a good frame of mind". Button made his own F1 debut at a similar stage in his career to Magnussen. The Dane is 21, while Button was 20 when he entered F1 with Williams in 2000.

"He's got more experience than I had," Button said. "He's had a lot of experience for his age. But the testing is something that's quite difficult. Getting miles is a little more difficult than it was back then but from what the team have said he picks things up very quickly.

"The test in Abu Dhabi, he was very quick from the word go, and the same in Silverstone. "He needs that and it's lucky he has that natural ability. That will definitely help him."

"We are having a very bad season, there is a lot of pressure in the team and if McLaren does not succeed next year fighting for the championship it is going to be a very difficult life for McLaren."

Button, though, said he felt Perez, who is now looking for a drive to salvage his F1 career and has been tipped to join Force India, had "come a long way in terms of driving this year".

"He has learnt a lot, put in some good performances," said Button."The one that stands out is India (where Perez finished fifth, equalling Button's best result of the season). "It's always difficult to compare yourself when you've had issues in a certain race but in India he did a very good job.

"He has really picked up a lot and learnt a lot... and improved himself not just in terms of speed but in being a racing driver, in terms of developing the car and tyre management and what have you.

Porsche 911 Turbo 2014

Porsche’s intention is to give you it all. Blistering speed, of course, but, just as important, daily usability, the comfort of a sheik’s casbah, and the best fuel efficiency possible in a 911 offering up to 560 horsepower. In cracking its lid and packing in even more horses, the car’s keister swells by yet another 1.1 inches from its predecessor. The 911 Turbo has always had hips you want to grab with both hands and squeeze, but now, from the back, the new Turbo looks like a Peter Paul Rubens scene in CinemaScope.

Porsche is compelled to turn up the wick to fend off  interlopers in the $150,000-to-$200,000 sandbox where the Turbo now plays. There are AMGs, Aston Martins, and Audi R8s rattling around in this space, plus the forthcoming McLaren P13. Hence, both the base Turbo and the Turbo S are for the first time being launched simultaneously, for $149,250 and $182,050, respectively. The price difference basically pays for all the Turbo’s performance options including carbon-ceramic brakes, plus 40 horsepower, center-lock forged wheels, slightly different air intakes up front, and the all-important “S” badge.

Strapped with twin BorgWarner compressors using variable-vane geometry, originally a technology for spinning up turbos faster in diesels, the 3.8-liter flat-six encases new shorter-skirt pistons and forged connecting rods among the modifications needed to handle both 14.5 psi of whistling boost and a 9.8:1 compression ratio. If 520 horsepower isn’t enough, the Turbo S makes 560 on 17.4 psi, with a torque peak of 516 pound-feet arriving at just 2100 rpm. Both cars can squirt another 2.2 psi into their pots on temporary overboost.

With the one transmission available in all Turbos—the seven-speed dual-clutch PDK—locked into its optional launch control, the ETA for 60 mph should be 2.7 seconds in the S. Porsche encouraged us to launch the car as many times as we liked, and the perfectly repeatable violence of it is terrifying. If you don’t have your head against the backrest before detonation, you’ll feel it in the morning. More technology: A revised four-wheel-drive system switches from the base Carrera 4’s ball-ramp-activated front-axle coupling to a new liquid-cooled Haldex hydraulic device (both are electronically controlled). Engineers say the extra precision offered by hydraulic control allows for better tuning of the torque-vectoring feature.

An electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential combined with single-rear-wheel brake applications helps steer the car into corners. Rear-wheel steering, as in the new GT3, also sharpens the car’s reflexes, while its aerodynamic downforce automatically elevates at speed via a height- and angle-adjustable rear wing and a flexible three-section chin spoiler that drops down in two phases via air bladders. At low speed, the black lip stays retracted out of the scrape zone.

720-HP Lingenfelter Corvette Stingray

At the 2013 SEMA show, Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) introduced a supercharged version of the 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 in the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, along with several new parts for the new LT1 and EcoTec3 engines.

We sat down with LPE operations manager Mike Copeland at the 2013 SEMA show to learn about the company’s offerings for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and full-size GM pickups.  2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Lingenfelter Dyno Graph LPE prides itself by offering reliable high-performance upgrades, crate engines, and turn-key cars.

Some of these new parts include ported heads, camshafts, valvetrain components, fuel upgrades, and a TVS2300 supercharger. With these pieces, the LT1 engine on display produces 720 hp at 6500 rpm and 655 lb-ft of torque at 3800 rpm. Maximum boost is set at 7.0 psi with peak power arriving at just 5.3 psi. The custom camshaft is the first – and mildest - of five camshafts being developed for the new LT1 engine.

While the engine on display was rated 720 hp, LPE hasn’t released performance figures for its upcoming Corvette Stingray packages. Like its current offerings for the C6 Corvette, we expect LPE to offer several packages for the 2014 Stingray with power starting around 500 hp and reaching as high as 900 hp with forced induction.

Lingenfelter Supercharged 62L LT1 V8 Front LPE engineers tuned the new LT1 using what they learned from working on GM’s 3.6-liter V-6. While 450 hp is possible with the Camaro’s V-6, the stock components didn’t meet the company’s reliability requirements and development was discontinued. That could change, however, with the increased durability of the 2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport’s twin-turbo 3.6-liter engine.

Although known for its Corvette and Camaro performance, the tuner upgrades trucks, SUVs, and the Cadillac CTS-V. Currently, LPE offers 10 crate engines ranging from 6.2 to 7.0 liters with naturally aspirated engines producing 550 to 660 hp and supercharged engines making 650 to 930 hp. LPE works with displacements ranging from the outgoing Silverado/Sierra pickup’s 4.8-liter V-8 to a 7.2-liter stroker engine, while custom twin-turbo builds for up to 1500 hp are available.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Lingenfelter Front Three Quarters In addition to power upgrades, the company offers suspension, brake, wheel and tire setups as well as body kits with packages and turn-key cars available through new GM dealers.

While many parts are built by other companies, such as Brembo and Comp Cams, the parts are built to LPE’s specs. LPE is also developing a truck aimed at the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. Based on the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, the Reaper pickup has a redesigned suspension developed with Ride Tech and Fox Racing as well as a new front end.

LPE expects the naturally aspirated Reaper to be priced about the same as the Raptor, while a supercharged version is expected to undercut the Roush and Shelby Raptor models. The Reaper will be shown in New Orleans in January.

MV Agusta F3 800 Ago

What would an EICMA show be without a special commemorative machine from that little company in Varese? Behold the MV Agusta F3 800 Ago, a special edition motorcycle to celebrate one of the greatest motorcycle racers of all time, Giacomo Agostini.

On hand for the unveiling of his special edition machine, Mr. Agostini signed the very first model, which sports his signature Tricolore and gold racing livery, and is fitted with copious carbon fiber bits.

No mechanical work has been done to the MV Agusta F3 800, though we think the effect from the paint and carbon is very fetching. A small collection of photos are after the jump.

New Pug 308 5 Door

The New 308 is one-of-a-kind. It’s sleek, it’s elegant, and every last detail is designed to make your senses come alive. The bodywork is streamlined and dynamic, and the same can be said of the interior too. Our unique PEUGEOT i-Cockpit is stripped right down, with most functions controlled by the touchscreen, allowing you a high level of technology as well as a pure, minimal design.

Time to let your senses come out to play with the New 308. Lighter than the previous 308, with a lower centre of gravity, a more compact steering wheel and newly-developed electric power steering, the New 308 is incredibly responsive and controlled. And with intuitive features like the interactive touch screen, plus the minimal, luxury cabin, there really are moments when you’re not sure where you end and the car starts.

Due to its simplified, streamlined design ethos, the New 308 is very efficient. It’s 140kg lighter than the previous 308, without sacrificing strength or space, and the range of eight engines offer both power and efficiency, with the diesel 1.6 HDi (coming Summer 2014) giving 120bhp and just 82g/km CO2 – currently unheard of in any other car in this segment. Even the LED headlights are now more efficient, delivering a car where performance and efficiency are perfectly balanced.

The challenge behind the New 308 was to produce a car that will be like new after three years of driving it. So the greatest care has been taken over every detail, from the plush leather seating to the scratch-resistant dashboard. It’s built on a brand new platform (chassis) and is made from a high-strength steel using a new welding process. We know we've built a strong, high quality car, but, just to be on the safe side, we’ve put it through its paces with over 400,000 miles of endurance and safety testing and 1000 test drivers.

Peugeot Django

Django Sport

As a pioneer in the motorised two-wheeled adventure by giving birth to the first motorcycle in 1898, as the winner of the most prestigious competitions such as the Bol d'Or and the Grand Prix des Nations, and as the inventor of the modern scooter with plastic bodywork just 30 years ago, for the past 115 years Peugeot Scooters has always found a way to renew itself to create even greater surprises. Now, by investing in the neo-retro segment with Django, it is delving into its history to improve its designs for the future.

STYLING HISTORY

Created in the early 1950s, at the time the S55 was a very comfortable and well-equipped two-seater scooter with genuine practical qualities. First and foremost, it was the very first scooter marketed by Peugeot and over time evolved into the S57. As a symbol of freedom and French elegance, our designers have taken their inspiration from this scooter to create the silhouette of its successor: Django.

With its musical name and its irresistibly retro styling, Django owes its identity to a unique heritage. Inspired by its past, Django is a scooter with lines that seem to want to rewrite history, 60 years later. A question of styling history. In fact, above all, Django is an elegant creation.

The most demanding observers will appreciate the styling hints of the past and the refinement of a vehicle on which nothing has been left to chance. Standing solidly on its 12’’ wheels, Django seems to flow like a flagship, characterised by its well-rounded rear wings punctuated by 3 air intakes, and its long, flowing bodywork reminiscent of the saloon cars of that era.

RETRO SPIRIT WITH«NEO» TECHNOLOGY

While its obvious S55 / S57 lineage is undeniable from the strict aesthetic standpoint, Django is nevertheless a resolutely modern scooter on the technology front, as epitomised by the design of its lighting. Equipped with an all-LED lighting system, the Lion set in the centre of the wide front grille framed by the daytime lighting surround sets Django apart from all the other scooters on the market: like its cousin the Peugeot Metropolis, with its lighting strip between the 2 front wheels, a simple glance is all it takes to identify its unique personality. The same principle is apparent at the rear with a light cluster comprising high visibility signature strip-lighting that enhances Django’s neoretro spirit.

In addition to this equipment that has again been inspired by Peugeot’s automobile universe, Peugeot Scooters breaks with tradition by contrasting retro styling with resolutely state-of-the-art equipment: powered by 4 different high-performance and fuel-efficient versions, Django offers an arsenal of engines ranging from a 50 c.c two-stroke to a 125 c.c. and 150 c.c. four-stroke.

From the safety standpoint, the Synchro Braking Control (SBC) integral braking system distributes braking effort simultaneously to the front and rear wheels and is available as standard equipment on 125 c.c. and 150 c.c. models.

A radical change is apparent in front of the rider as, at the centre of a dashboard with very ≪fifties≫ styling, an LCD screen displays total and partial trip meters, the ambient temperature and actual speed, in addition to the analogue speedometer needle. With its perfect ergonomic design, Django boasts allnew controls styled to match the embossed form of the front grille displaying the Peugeot Lion.

Life on board could not be more welcoming: first of all for the legs of the rider, who will appreciate the vast flat footboard painted the same colour as the body and protected by elegant non-slip strips to provide a firm grip for shoes and prevent any bags from sliding under strong braking.

The low seat height culminating at 770 mm means that Django is accessible for the majority of riders. The seating is comfortable and padded, depending on the universe selected, and is also very welcoming: with a 1,363 mm wheelbase and an overall length of 1,944 mm, Django is particularly roomy to ride, notably two-up when both the rider and passenger have enough comfortable space to avoid them getting in each other’s way.

As a functional scooter, Django is equipped with a 12V power socket in the glove box located on the back of the leg-shield, a bag hook, 2 bag hooks located under the seat and extensive under-seat storage space to accommodate a jet helmet.

With Allure, Sport, Evasion & Heritage, Peugeot is proposing 4 predefined universes that define radically different Django styling codes and equipment levels. With this approach, the client only has to choose the engine type, the bodywork colour, and any possible accessories.

As the hyper-customisation king, by way of the Django ID configurator no fewer than 118 000 different models can be produced. They are aimed at attracting a young, male and female urban clientele with a sense of fashion, seeking to travel about easily and stylishly.

A Goodbye For Felipe Massa

Mugello, 10 November – An unforgettable day. Felipe Massa’s farewell parade in front of the Ferrari crowd will always stay in the Brazilian’s heart. Over fifteen thousand turned up to give him a send-off, braving the less than welcoming weather, given that it rained heavily for much of the day. They turned out to see Felipe at the very same track where he had his first Formula 1 test, for Sauber way back in 2001. After twelve years, the end of an important page in the history books for Felipe the man and for the team he grew up with, is gradually coming to an end, as he still has the USA and Brazilian Grands Prix to race for the Scuderia.

“I’ve been lucky, I have had a great career with Ferrari, longer than I had ever dreamed of at the start,” said Felipe when he met the press. “When I began racing in go-karts as a kid, I had a red Ferrari suit and it’s always been the team I supported. Even when Senna was at McLaren and Piquet at Williams, I was cheering for Ferrari! We began our relationship in 2001 and I have raced for them for eight seasons, which is a very important part of my life. I have so many friends at Ferrari and I will miss them, as I will also miss the nice days I spent at the factory in Maranello. I am happy with the way my time with the Prancing Horse turned out.”

Yesterday’s tribute took place at the owners’ gala dinner at the Stazione Leopolda in Florence, which was opened by Felipe arriving in a Formula 1 car and ended with a ten minute standing ovation, while today it continued in front of all the fans at Mugello. “These are memories that will stay with me always, just like so many other beautiful moments spent together, starting with the wins,” continued Felipe. “For example, I think back to the wins at Interlagos, because for a Brazilian, to win your home race is something amazing. Sure, the dream just slipped out of my grasp, namely winning the world title in front of my home crowd, but that wasn’t the race where I lost the 2008 title: when you finish second by a point the key moment could have come at so many different places and I’m thinking of Singapore for example, or Budapest, or others still…”

It’s not just memories that Felipe will take home with him. At the end of his demonstration run at the wheel of an F10, which he drove alongside another veteran, Marc Gene, President Luca di Montezemolo, Vice President Piero Ferrari and Managing Director Amedeo Felisa presented the Brazilian driver with a special cup, engraved with the names of the eleven Grands Prix he won during his time in red. It’s a rather bulky piece of silverware, as the cup stands 120 centimetres tall, but we are sure Felipe will find it a prominent position at home and metaphorically in his heart.

Marc Marquez The Baby Champion MotoGP 2013

Marc Marquez has become the youngest MotoGP champion as a third-place finish at the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix secured him the 2013 world title in his rookie year.

Jorge Lorenzo won the race but Marquez, 20, only had to finish fourth to become the first debut-season title-winner since American Kenny Roberts in 1978. Dani Pedrosa was second, but only Lorenzo could deny Marquez. "This is a dream that comes true," he said. "I cannot explain what I feel."

Confirmation of the title win for Marquez sparked wild celebrations throughout the 104,000-strong crowd as the young Spanish rider wrote his name into the history books.
"I didn't expect to fight for the championship [this season]," Marquez told BBC Sport.

"Jorge Lorenzo did a great job but thanks to my team." Lorenzo said: "Marquez has been a deserving champion, today is his day." Marquez had started on pole but was overtaken by 2012 champion Lorenzo at the first corner.

Conscious of the need to avoid unnecessary risks, Marquez showed maturity not to get involved in a tussle with Lorenzo at the front. Instead, his team-mate Pedrosa battled with his fellow Spaniard before contact between the two with 21 laps to go saw the former drop down the field.

Marquez then briefly fought his way into the front but Lorenzo again battled back to take the lead. With the gap between the front three and rest of the pack increasing, Marquez appeared to sense he had done enough to secure the title as he rode safely to third place, with Pedrosa having fought his way back up to second.

Seven-times world champion Valentino Rossi finished fourth, while Briton Cal Crutchlow crashed out.

Valencia Grand Prix results:
1. Jorge Lorenzo (Spa) Yamaha 46'10.302
2. Dani Pedrosa (Spa) Repsol Honda 46'14.236

Aston Martin Vantage S 2015

Aston’s Vantage S certainly looks the part, despite the age of its basic bones, ready to pounce with its wide stance and pronounced rear wheel arches. New for the Vantage S is a carbon-fiber grille inset, black in our test car’s case. Arrayed across the hood are extensive vents for the V-12, accented in optional red-tinted carbon fiber. Inside are a driver-oriented cockpit and a tall center stack with two important buttons: one for adjusting steering response and setting the adaptive damping to Normal, Sport, or Track mode; and a second that toggles a Sport mode for quicker throttle responses and shifts and a throatier growl out back.

That growl is generated by the V-12, a carry-over from the days when Ford owned Aston, now shucked of all its FoMoCo roots save the rods and the pistons. Aston rates its AM28 V-12 at 565 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque, 376 of the latter ready at 1000 rpm. Sixty mph comes up in an estimated 3.8 seconds, with an ethereal 205-mph terminal velocity.

Our test route rose from Palm Springs into the mountains, much of it two-lane highways studded with rough patchwork repairs. The Aston didn’t much care. The suspension’s Track setting was a tad stiff, but the Normal and Sport levels soaked up road-surface foibles with ease while not degrading handling. We kept the throttle and shift response set to Sport, and our only concern was how quickly and effortlessly license-shredding velocities were achieved.

Shifty Business

The main reason the car proves unsuitable for daily use is the Graziano-sourced Sportshift III automated manual transmission. It’s the only gearbox offered (Aston dropped its conventional manual-transmission option in the Vantage a few years ago). The automated manual is sensible, we suppose, for a car that is “extreme in its nature” but not for one driven off-track to Del Taco. We did back-country highway runs from rest to triple digits, and the shifts were almost shocking in their stiffness—they came with a wham. The roughness feels out of place in 2013, like watching Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone hobble through a new action flick.

Dodging through endless esses up a mountainside, the stiff shifts weren’t a bother because we didn’t need to change gears very often. With the V-12’s broad, strong torque curve, there was little need to do other than stay in third and let the engine go to work. The Aston clawed its way through the switchbacks with mighty grip.

Back into Palm Springs, the transmission was again an aggravation. Even in the drive setting, automatic shifts came with a pause and lurch, transforming the Aston from a car in its element to one akin to using a Kentucky Derby entrant as a plow horse. It looked good, but it was wasting its talents. Indeed, the 205-mph V-12 Vantage S is best saved for special, full-monty occasions.

Kawasaki Z1000 2014

The Kawasaki Z1000 first launched in 2003 got its major update in 2013 with the 953cc engine replaced by a bigger 1043cc unit. Power figures were bumped up from 123 to 126 bhp with torque figures going up from 98.7Nm to 110Nm. The wicked looking new 2014 Kawasaki Z1000 seems to take these numbers even higher.

Kawasaki’s new naked bike is giving us the full monty, courtesy of Japan’s Mr. Bike. Getting a chance to film the new Kawasaki Z1000 with up-close panning shots, we are even treated to the new Z’s exhaust note.

For the new model year, things seem to be mainly an aesthetic overhaul — the great internet debate is now whether the new Z1000 retains its predecessor’s 136hp motor, or whether the machine gets the 140hp lump from the Kawasaki Z1000SX. One would presume the latter, though both engines are of the same ilk and difficult to distinguish from visually.

Technical specifications have still been kept under wraps, but Keishi Fukumoto, Kawasaki’s design head, had already stated that 2014 Kawasaki Z1000 “delivers an increase in overall performance”. Speculations abound, the new Z1000 is slated to deliver around 140 PS of max power and peak torque of 120 Nm.

Whatever the case may be, power output will be roughly similar, with maybe the 2014 Kawasaki Z1000 getting 4hp or so extra. From the screen captures though, we can see that ABS has been added to the new Kawasaki Z1000, and a quick look at the dash shows us that Kawasaki’s dual-riding mode system is present, along with its three-level KTRC traction control system.
