Suzuki Solio Bandit

Suzuki Hustler

Suzuki Motor Corp. said Tuesday its new Hustler minivehicle, which combines the characteristics of a car and a sport utility vehicle, will go on sale Jan. 8.

The name Hustler was chosen to conjure the image of agility, as well as invite nostalgia from customers who remembered an off-road motorbike released in 1969 called the Hustler 250, said a Suzuki public relations officer.

The gasoline-powered minicar gets up to 29.2 km per liter, Suzuki said. The sticker price will range from ¥1.05 million to ¥1.58 million.

The new model shares a common platform with Suzuki’s mainstay Wagon R car but has more interior space and is equipped with safety systems to control its brakes on hills and snowy roads, the automaker said.

“We want customers to use the vehicle for having fun and adventures,” Chairman Osamu Suzuki said at a news conference in Tokyo, adding he hopes to boost sales of minicars with the new lineup despite the sales tax hike in April.

Regarding overall domestic car sales next year, however, the president said the sales tax hike will inevitably hit manufacturers. The company set a monthly sales target of 5,000 Hustlers.

KIA Sorento Diesel

KIA Sorento is the larger of two SUVs from the ambitious Korean importer. The smaller KIA Sportage is aimed more at the youth and small family market while the seven-seat Sorento is effectively a crossover people mover with some off-road ability in the AWD variants. The latest version of the Sorento was launched here in September 2012.

The choice of two- or four-wheel-drive is rapidly becoming the norm in the latest breed of SUVs, something that makes lots of sense because the majority of buyers neither want nor need drive to all four wheels, a feature that not only adds to the vehicle’s purchase price but also, because of the extra weight, to its fuel consumption and emissions.

While two of the models that Kia views as Sorento’s main competitors, Ford Territory and Toyota Kluger, do have 2WD variants, its Hyundai sibling – and so realistically its closest competitor – the Santa Fe, only comes with 4WD despite the two vehicles sharing the same platform.

VALUE
The 2.2-litre AWD Sorento Platinum we tested will set you back $50,390.
Standard equipment in all models includes stability control and traction control, ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist and downhill brake control, hill-start assist and parking sensors at both front and rear.

The mid-spec SLi adds a parking sensor dash display, reversing camera, leather trim seats and roof rails. Platinum models also gain satellite navigation, active high-intensity discharge Xenon headlights, push button ignition start and panoramic sunroof. Other features across the range include cruise control, mp3-compatible audio system, AUX/USB and iPod sockets and Bluetooth for both phone and audio streaming.

TECHNOLOGY
Kia Sorento comes with a choice of two engines, 3.5-litre V6 petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. The standard transmission is a six-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is available but only with the diesel engine and only in the entry level Sorento Si.

The V6 petrol has maximum power of 204 kW at 6300 rpm and torque of 335 Nm at 5000 rpm with combined fuel consumption listed at 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres. The turbo-diesel engine peaks at 145 kW of power at 3800 rpm and 421 Nm of torque (manual) and 436 Nm (automatic) between 1800 and 2500 rpm.

There are three equipment levels. Both the entry level Si and mid-spec SLi come with the choice of the two engines, while the flagship Platinum model, rather unusually, is only offered with the diesel engine.

DESIGN
Although there were a number of external changes they didn’t change the overall look of the vehicle to any significant extent. There was a redesigned grille, new LED headlights and taillights with daytime running lights at the front as well new bumpers and wheels and a different tailgate.

In people mover mode the management of Sorento’s interior space is critical and the Kia designers have managed to juggle the various passenger/luggage permutations nicely. As is invariably the case with mid-sized seven-seaters the third row is best left to pre-teen children even with a marginal improvement in legroom from the previous model.

The third row of seats do fold flat to provide up to 1047 litres of luggage space with the centre seats in place but drops to 285 litres with all seats occupied. The back row seats are split 50/50 to allow some extra seating flexibility. Adding another dimension to the Sorento, folding both rows of rear seats opens the rear up to a van-like capacity of 2052 litres.

DRIVING
Previous criticisms of the Sorento’s ride and handling have been addressed with the use of ultra high-tensile steel contributing to an 18 per cent increase in torsional rigidity improving ride comfort, handling and crash protection.

Reduction of noise, vibration and harshness levels was another of the tasks allotted to Kia engineers for the 2013 Sorento and they’ve done an excellent job with the interior noticeable quieter in both the petrol and diesel powered models.

The seats are comfortable and the ergonomics for the driver are very good. The steering has reach and height adjustment and the driver’s seat also has height adjust. The controls are large and easy to use and the steering wheel has remote controls for audio and cruise control.

On the road both the petrol and diesel versions are surprisingly spirited vehicles and hills and rapid overtaking are dispatched with ease. Sorento’s handling and cornering isn’t as sharp as the smaller, sportier Sportage but that’s not unexpected given the differing requirements of the two vehicles.

VERDICT
Kia Sorento is a neat and attractive SUV that offers plenty of options for a large family looking for a single vehicle that can handle a variety of tasks. Factor in Kia’s five year, unlimited kilometre warranty and it’s certainly worth adding to your shopping list.

Warranty: 5 years/unlimited km
Crash rating: 5-star ANCAP
Engine: 2.2-litre 4-cyl turbo-diesel, 145kW/436Nm
Transmission: 6-speed auto; AWD (on demand)
Thirst: 7.3L/100km; 192g/km CO2
Dimensions: 4685mm (L), 1885m (W), 1700m (H)
Weight: 1960kg

The Great CR7

New Nissan March 1.5

Torsinya terasa cukup padat sejak putaran rendah. Perpindahan gigi dapat berlangsung mulus, meski terasa entakan khas transmisi matik konvensional. March 1.5 cukup responsif saat akselerasi. Hasilnya adalah waktu 12,67 detik guna menuntaskan sprint 0-100 km/jam.

Setting suspensinya tidak mengalami sentuhan. Pendeknya jarak antar sumbu roda membuat goncangan jalan lebih kerap diteruskan ke bodi mobil. Meski bantingan suspensinya tidak terlalu keras, seringnya mobil bergoncang terasa mengganggu.

Pengendaliannya tidak mengecewakan. Mobil masih cukup nurut diajak manuver cepat. Electronic Power Steering membuat radius putar 4,5 m terasa kian mudah dan ringan.

New Nissan March tersedia dalam enam pilihan memikat. Yakni, red metallic, pearl metallic, pink metallic, olive green, silver metallic dan black pearl.

New Nissan March dibanderol mulai Rp181 juta untuk tipe New March 1.500cc M/T, dan Rp191 juta untuk 1.500cc A/T ( Harga Jual Per Des 2013 ).

TEENS

• Racing enthusiasts should climb behind the wheel of Microsoft Game Studios' Forza Motorsport 5 (Xbox One). The latest in the best-selling franchise lets you drive hundreds of bleeding-edge vehicles — including the 2013 McLaren P1, 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, and for the first time, open-wheel Formula One and Indy cars. Sharpen your skills while racing through the meaty Career mode. Or better yet, challenge your online friends to see who can reach the finish line first in exotic locations around the globe. Taking advantage of Xbox One's power, this next-generation driving simulation delivers stunning graphics, smooth animation and fast frame rates. Seatbelt not included.

• Pop music fans will appreciate receiving Ubisoft's Just Dance 2014 (from $39.99), a game especially fun for when you have company over for the holidays. The rhythm-based dancing game challenges up to four players to dance in front of the television. Their movements are picked up by the Kinect sensor (Xbox 360/One), PlayStation Move controller and camera (PlayStation 3/4) or wireless Wii Remote (Nintendo Wii/Wii U). While sweating it out to more than 50 songs — plus downloadable tracks including Katy Perry's Roar — your moves are graded in real time. The game offers multiple modes, varied skill levels and depending on the console, the ability to shoot video and upload it for friends to see.

• In Fullbright Company's Gone Home — a $20 indie game for Windows PC, Mac and Linux — you arrive at your Portland home after spending a year away in Europe. Problem is, your family isn't there to welcome you. While roaming the rooms of the empty Greenbriar mansion — reading notes on crumpled pieces of paper, listening to cassette recordings and bypassing environmental obstacles — you'll eventually piece together the mystery of what happened here and why. Without spoiling anything, the story gets increasingly interesting the more you unravel it. This slower-paced "interactive exploration simulator" borrows elements from the once-popular point-and-click adventure game genre.

• EA Sports' FIFA 14 (for all major consoles) is a pro soccer sim in which you can play as or against your favorite teams, in a number of international leagues, and take control over the various players on the "pitch." Using the analog sticks, you'll dribble, deke, pass and shoot to put a point on the scoreboard. The game includes a number of solo and multiplayer modes (including side-by-side and online play), realistic ball and player physics, plus there's some new features like Pure Shot (adjust your stride, approach and angle while shooting on the net), social features (EA Sports Football Club) and more emotion added to the game with its broadcast-style cameras, color commentary and team chants.

Other excellent games for teens include Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Pikmin 3 (Wii U), 2K Sports' NBA 2K14 (PlayStation 3/4, Xbox 360/One) and Ubisoft's Rayman Legends (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U).

ADULTS

The Last of Us
• One of the top games of the year, Sony's The Last of Us (PlayStation 3) takes place in the near future, after most of the Earth's population has been wiped out by a deadly viral outbreak. Mother Earth has now reclaimed the planet, growing over much of the streets and buildings. You play as a hardened middle-aged man, Joel, who vows to protect a 14 year-old girl, Ellie, from a number of threats as they make their way across the country. Between its emotionally-driven solo campaign and multiplayer modes, excellent writing and voice acting, this third-person thriller is one not to miss.

• One of the top games of the year, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Xbox 360/One, PlayStation 3/4, Nintendo Wii U and Windows PC) lets you sail the Seven Seas during the early 18th century as Edward Kenway, a resourceful pirate who finds himself caught between two warring secret societies: the Assassins and Templars. Ubisoft's ambitious open-ended adventure lets you engage in epic swashbuckling, treasure-seeking, ship pillaging and exploring new islands. Along with the lengthy solo campaign, it also supports multiplayer matches over the Internet.

• The "bad boy" of video games is back, and it's bigger and better than ever. Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) takes place in the fictional city of Los Santos — the Los Angeles-like urban playground first introduced in 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — as well as surrounding suburbs, beaches and the countryside. Jump in and out of the lives of three simultaneously playable lead characters, to experience all sides of an interconnected story. As with previous games, you can plan and execute a series of heists, "borrow" all kinds of automobiles and take part in various mini-games. The game also includes access to Grand Theft Auto Online, an open-world multiplayer game.

GTAV

• Unlike previous BioShock games, you're not trapped in the underwater city of Rapture. Instead, the wildly imaginative BioShock Infinite from 2K Games takes place on a floating air city in an alternate 1912, as you attempt to rescue a mysterious young woman with uncontrollable powers. The stunningly detailed world, memorable characters and cinematic action sequences — including the ability to engage in first-person firefights and hop on a roller-coaster-like rail system to get around (often at the same time) — all add to the unique and immersive gaming experience. The single-player adventure is available on Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC.

Other worthy "Mature"-rated game gifts include: Deep Silver's Metro: Last Light ( Xbox 360, PS3 and PC), Sony's Beyond: Two Souls (PlayStation 3), Electronic Arts' Battlefield 4 (Xbox 360/One, PlayStation 3/4 and Windows PC), Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist (Xbox 360, PS3 and PC), Activision's Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox 360/One, PlayStation 3/4, Nintendo Wii U, Windows PC) and Ubisoft's Crysis 3 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC),

High-End Gaming Notebook

Mainstream Gaming Notebooks ($1000-$1500)

When we get to the mainstream gaming notebooks, I have to look at the $800 Y410p recommended above and then find more expensive alternatives that offer noteworthy upgrades. What that means for gaming notebooks is that NVIDIA's GTX GPUs are the bare minimum I'll consider here – the GTX 760M is actually a fairly sizable jump in performance from the GT 755M, despite the relative proximity of their model numbers. The GT 755M has 384 CUDA cores running at 980MHz compared to 768 cores at 657MHz on the GTX 760M, with GPU Boost 2.0 on the 760M potentially running the GPU at even higher clocks. The GT 755M is basically good for 1366x768 medium to high detail gaming, or 1600x900 medium detail; the GTX 760M on the other hand can tackle 1600x900 medium to high detail or 1920x1080 medium detail. Basically, we're looking at a 20-30% performance advantage for the GTX 760M over the GT 755M, and an even larger advantage over the other GT 700M class GPUs. So with that said, I started looking for GTX class GPUs – though I should note that the Y510p is available in SLI form as well, which should be slightly faster than the GTX 760M/765M in most cases (as long as a game scales well with SLI).

The good news is that we've already looked at several of the contenders in this category of gaming laptop/notebook – the MSI GE40, Gigabyte P34G, and Razer Blade 14 give us an idea of what to expect in terms of performance and features. Other laptops that fall into this category include the Acer V3-772G, Clevo W230ST/W355STQ/W370ST, Gigabyte P27K/P35K, MSI GE60/GE70, Alienware 14/17, ASUS G750JW, ASUS N56JR, and maybe one or two others that I missed. Key things to look for in my mind are the display resolution and panel type, and the presence of an SSD. SSD caching is a step above hard drives, but at this price I really think you should be getting a 120GB SSD or larger. That's of course something you can add on your own without too much trouble on most laptops, and personally I'd rather add at least a 240GB SSD than to get a 120GB model, but some of the prices are pretty reasonable.

First Choice: Gigabyte P34G ($1400)

My current pick for a mainstream gaming laptop goes to the Gigabyte P34G. I know, the review still isn't done, but I've run a bunch of benchmarks and there's nothing that causes me concern. The P34G comes with a Core i7-4700HQ processor, GTX 760M GPU, 128GB SSD for the OS and applications, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, and an AHVA (similar to IPS) 1920x1080 matte display that looks great. The industrial design isn't quiet as nice as something like the Razer Blade 14, but it's an impressive amount of performance packed into a sub-4 lbs. Package no matter how you slice it. As the first Gigabyte laptop we've looked at in many years, it really has a lot to offer. $1400 is more than you'd pay for similar performance from a few of the other contenders, but while the Acer V3-772G-9460 basically matches the P35G in performance for $200 less, it also weighs roughly twice as much.

Runner-Up: Cleo W230ST with 240GB SSD ($1400)

I haven't had hands-on time with any of the Clevo notebooks I mentioned above, so I unfortunately can't say much about how they feel. I do have a Clevo W740SU, and while it's not necessarily a gaming laptop it does give me a few concerns about Clevo's latest offerings. They fixed the keyboard layout as far as I'm concerned, but at least on the W740SU, the actual feel of the keyboard is terrible – I get missed keystrokes all the time on it. (Hopefully the other new models have a better keyboard feel.) Battery life is also much lower than it should be, and that's typical of Clevo notebooks – they just don't optimize for battery life as well as many of the other OEMs. Still, the ability to fully configure your notebook is definitely attractive, and boutiques like AVADirect allow you to do exactly that, so you won't have to open up the chassis and add your own SSD, and pricing isn't bad either. Of the three, I'd personally go with either the 13.3” W230ST and its 1080p AAS display or the 15.6” W355STQ – the latter being larger and less expensive, but it doesn't have an IPS/AHVA/AAS display. Either way, you can configure your system with a 240GB mSATA SSD and a 1TB HDD (or SSHD if you want one of those) and still remain under the $1500 price point.

High-End Gaming Notebooks ($1500+)

At the high-end of the gaming notebook market, there is really only one reasonable GPU in my opinion, and it's NVIDIA's GTX 780M. Yes, there are laptops with GTX 770M as well, but it's a fairly sizable step down from the 780M and not necessarily much cheaper. If you're spending close to $2000 (or more) on a gaming notebook, I can't see going with anything less than the best GPU. With the GPU requirements out of the way, we only have four main contenders, but I'll go ahead and at least mention a couple more GTX 770M notebooks for reference.

Starting with GTX 780M options, Dell has their Alienware 17 and Alienware 18 notebooks, though at this point I really think with the 18 being so large it needs the option for a 2560x1440 display to go with the SLI GPUs. Clevo has several notebooks as well, including the single-GPU P150SM/P157SM and P170SM/P177SM as well as the dual-GPU capable P370SM/P375SM/P570WM – again, I'm going to pass on recommending the SLI options, and personally I'd skip the tramp stamp P157SM and P177SM. A newcomer to the list is the ASUS G750JH, which is reasonably equipped for $2239. Finally, there's MSI with their GT60 and GT70 notebooks. I've linked AVADirect on the Clevo and MSI laptops, but you can find the same core notebook from many other vendors as well – CyberPowerPC, DigitalStorm, OriginPC, Sager Notebooks, XoticPC, Puget Systems, and Mythlogic come to mind. The only real differences between the various vendors will be pricing, configuration options, and perhaps a few visual modifications (e.g. a different cover for your laptop).

In the realm of GTX 770M laptops, nearly all of the notebooks we already mentioned can be configured with a GTX 770M as well. There are two other notebooks that I'm aware of that support the 770M but not the 780M: the ASUS G750JX and the Toshiba Qosmio X70/X75. I'm actually working on testing the G75JX, and the inclusion of a 256GB SSD along with the 1TB HDD is certainly appreciated. All of the 17.3” notebooks are really large, though – I've been mostly sticking with 15.6” and smaller laptops for my own use over the past several years, and hauling around the G750JX on my Thanksgiving trip has been a bit of an eye opener. Everyone that sees it comments, “Wow, that thing is huge!” So with that said, my favorite high-end gaming notebooks these days are sporting 15.6” displays.

First Choice: Clevo P150SM ($2000+)

Having tested the P157SM, I'm inclined to go with the P150SM instead – aesthetically, it's just more pleasing to not have that ugly trackpad, but YMMV. Configured with the i7-4700MQ, 8GB RAM, a 240GB SSD, 1TB Seagate SSHD, and a GTX 780M the price comes to around $2000, depending on where you buy the laptop. The hardware is plenty fast, and the majority of games can basically be run at “maxed out” settings and 1920x1080. If you're looking for other potential configuration choices, consider upgrading the CPU to the i7-4800MQ or i7-4900MQ, as there are a few games where the 4700MQ can limit performance. Personally, on a high-end notebook I'd also seriously consider going with a 480GB/512GB SSD – 128GB simply isn't enough for most of the applications, documents, etc. that I use, and even 256GB can feel a bit cramped. With 512GB, I'm able to install all the software I want and still have plenty of space for video and image editing, a few games, etc. Not all vendors offer 512GB mSATA drives, but Mythlogic's Pollux 1613-Black does have the option for a 512GB Samsung SSD as a $444 upgrade – not too bad, considering brand new 2.5” 512GB SSDs cost around $400.

Runner Up: Alienware 17 ($2449)

The MSI GT60/GT70 aren't bad notebooks, but the use of a single fan for cooling definitely represents a concern, so given other alternatives I'd go elsewhere. Clevo gets my top pick for bang-for-the-buck, but for around $400 more the Alienware 17 may have a more pleasing design for some users, and it does use higher quality materials. The configuration I'd go with has an i7-4800MQ CPU, GTX 780M, 16GB RAM, a 750GB HDD with 80GB SSD cache (the size of the cache might actually make the AW17 perform closer to an SSD than HDD in regular use), 802.11ac WiFi, and a 17.3” 1920x1080 LCD. Considering you get a larger SSD for less money in the Clevo, you really have to be committed to the Alienware aesthetic before going this route, but either way performance will be excellent.
